Long popular in Japan and Europe where work often is done in tight spaces, mini-excavators have become a force in this country as American machine manufacturers have developed their own mini-excavators to compete with popular imports. And a large number of mini-excavators on U.S. jobsites today are rented.
Most general rental centers have at least a couple of these smooth-operating compacts. Equipment-rental specialists have mini-excavator fleets with models in several sizes to meet the needs of customers doing a variety of construction, maintenance, landscaping, and demolition projects.

Size is one obvious reason for the popularity of mini-excavators. Small footprints allow the machines to work in backyards, narrow easements, inside buildings, and other areas where larger equipment can’t go. Mini-excavators speed completion of many jobs by doing work that otherwise would require hand labor. Their size and light weight mean equipment can be transported by trucks that don’t require drivers with commercial drivers’ licenses.
But size isn’t the only reason users like mini-excavators. The ability to dig offset trenches sets them apart from backhoe-loaders and other excavation equipment. This is made possible by two features: a rotating cab and independent left-right boom swing, which enables the operator to offset the boom to dig adjacent to foundations, fences and other obstacles.

Motor homes and RVs come in two main configurations, namely, those that are integrated self-powered vehicles, and those that are towed by a detachable vehicle. There are classes of every size in each of these two modes, ranging from small camper vans to hundred thousand dollar conversion trailers on one side, and small caravan-style travel trailers to the largest fifth wheel coupling trailers and park models on the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and which is suitable forreally depends on your requirements, budget, and circumstances.
The single most compelling argument for your purchasing any of the integrated models such as Class A, B, C, conversion vans, or camper vans is quite simply that the vehicle is included with the RV itself. Towing is not a trivial process, and inexperienced drivers should not attempt to tow an RV (or anything else) without proper instruction or supervision of someone who does have the necessary experience. It should go without saying that practicing your towing skills on your brand new mobile home could prove to have rather costly consequences.
With the classes mentioned, the RV component of the mobile home is built around the vehicle chassis itself. This means that we can trust (with reasonable certainty) that the frame and engine of the vehicle are ideally suited to the load will be carrying. While it’s still necessary to approach the vehicle with many of the same cautions as would when towing a load, such as paying close attention to how much cargo you load up, the road conditions, and your speed, once you’ve properly stowed everything.
Some of these vehicles (conversion vans in particular) have the added benefit of providing immediate access to the rear, main compartment of the RV from the passenger and driver area. Many RVs are not designed to be used while in motion; however, this is not the case for some vehicles which feature this open-plan style design, which younger travelers in particular might find appealing for road trips and camping. The advantages of bi-fold trailers, travel trailers, park models, and 5th wheel coupling trailers are also quite compelling, for different reasons. First and foremost of these is the simple fact that once the RV is deployed, the tow vehicle can be detached and driven away independently. This allows you greater flexibility once your RV is parked, in that we can drive faster and with greater ease than with the load on the back. As well as general ease, lightening the load will allow your vehicle to drive places the assembled RV cannot, which is likely to be advantageous.Perhaps best of all, however, is the fact that without the extra few tons of load, the vehicle is much more fuel efficient when driving.
Other advantages to a hitched trailer are that once the RV itself is deployed, should you need to drive into town or go out for supplies,and anyone who wishes to stay with the trailer can do so. In the case of park models, 5th wheels, and some larger trailers, it is not normal for the RV to have a dedicated tow vehicle. Instead, a single truck can deliver and pick up the RV at a designated time, which is more cost effective for all concerned. we need only own the trailer itself, which allows more of your money to go into buying features, as opposed to the underlying vehicle, while the tow vehicle can be hired as needed from any trucking company.

Some may be shiny new and some old and beat up, but even the beaters probably run well and work hard. Ford really does build tough trucks, and when new they sell for less than a lot of others.
The toughness comes from solid design and careful manufacturing, thanks to a small corps of “truck people” within Ford Motor automobile-oriented ranks. The comparatively low prices are made possible by volume components, primarily the cab from the perennially popular pickup line.
So it is with Ford’s new F650 and F750 SuperDuty trucks and tractors, which use high-volume cabs from the lighter-duty SuperDuty pickup series. Economy of scale further improves because the cabs go on a 4000 series chassis from International—the highest-volume player in the Class 7 truck business.
The F650s and F750s are smoother and quieter than one direct competitor, a GMC truck on hand for a driving comparison. Static display of models from Freightliner and International showed these have taller, roomier cabs. But the cabs are aluminum—a premium material that many buyers won’t pay for, Ford people argued.
Ford’s cabs are strong, economical steel. And they come in three styles: two-door Regular cab, four-door SuperCab and four-door CrewCab. International and Freightliner also offer three cabs, but their extended cab has no rear doors. The Ford SuperCab has a pair of rear-hinged doors for ease of loading and unloading tools, extra passengers, or whatever you want to stash back there.
Ford’s cabs sit low on the frame, easing the climb for the typical medium-truck driver, who’s in and out of the cab many times a day. Inside, with the dash, most instruments and controls, and trim packages taken right out of the light-duty models. Folks used to Ford trucks will feel at home, but those accustomed to a more “trucky” interior might think they’ve come down in the world.
Roof height is low, which is okay with low-slung bench seats but might be a problem with an optional individual air-ride driver’s seat. This needs to be raised somewhat for its suspension to work fully, and tall people might find their scalps touching the ceiling.
The windshield angles back steeply, which improves aerodynamics for highway cruising—something not overly important to a work truck—and the hood slopes steeply downward so I couldn’t see the corners of the nose. But quickly learned where they were, and everything in front of and to the sides of the truck were readily visible. Tight wheel cuts aided maneuverability.

A backhoe loader is a piece of heavy construction equipment which actually marries two separate devices: a backhoe and a loader. Many contracting companies use backhoe loaders because they are powerful, efficient, fairly compact, and easier to maintain than two separate devices. Some consumers may be familiar with the sight of a backhoe loader, since the machines are frequently used for roadwork and major construction projects. Several companies dominate the market for backhoe loaders, including Case, Volvo, Caterpillar equipment, and John Deere.
The core of a backhoe loader is a tractor base. The tractor has wide, rugged wheels and a strong engine, allowing it to muscle its way over a variety of terrain. The tractor also has a cab or covered area for the operator, allowing him or her to work through inclement weather. Inside the cab, two separate sets of controls are used to manipulate the elements of the backhoe loader.
The backhoe portion of the equipment is actually located on the rear end. A backhoe is a type of excavator at the end of a long arm. When the operator manipulates the controls, the backhoe can be used to dig high volumes of material very quickly. Other tools can be attached to this flexible arm, such as tools used to break up concrete. While the backhoe is in use, the backhoe loader is parked and anchored with stabilizer legs, which pull the wheels off the ground and stop the backhoe loader from moving.
The loader section of the equipment is a giant scoop. It can be filled with material for transport elsewhere, or it can be used to smooth and plow roadways. Since transport of materials is often required after their excavation, the backhoe loader conveniently bundles both tasks into one machine. Specialized training is required before someone can run a backhoe loader safely, and a supervisor on site usually ensures that the equipment is being used safely and appropriately.
Case was one of the first companies to realize the potential applications for a backhoe loader, thanks to a pioneering engineer. A construction boom after the Second World War led to a rising demand for construction equipment which could do jobs quickly and efficiently. Case backhoes started to come with a loader option as well, and other companies picked up the trend. In many cases, a backhoe loader is the only piece of heavy equipment owned by a small construction company, since it has many uses, especially if different attachments can be used on the backhoe arm.

Ford’s happy spot has been trucks; the bigger the better, but pricey fuel is changing that scene. Smaller SUVs car are what’s hot; good news for loyal fans of the traditionally laid-out Escape and its Hybrid variant. In the second act of a two-part makeover — design last year, mechanical this year — the 5-passenger Escape is refitted to please.
There are three models of Escape: 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and the 4-cylinder/electric motor Hybrid. All are available in front- or all-wheel drive. Despite their truck-ish styling, all Escapes are built on a 4-door unibody chassis for car-like driving dynamics and are designed primarily for on-pavement use.
Trim levels are XLS, XLT and XLD, the last commonly referred to as the Limited. The sole XLS is the base Escape with the 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. A relative rarity, you’re much more apt to encounter the XLT and Limited which use a new 6-speed automatic transmission exclusively. They are well stocked with desirables such as SIRIUS satellite radio and heated mirrors.
Last year Hybrid buyers were left wanting some of the nicer features of the XLT and Limited gasoline models. No more,Escape Hybrid and Escape Limited Hybrid car incorporate feature content identical to their gas counterparts. The gearbox differs, however, as the hybrids use a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Escapes roll on 16-inch wheels, although a 17-inch option is popular. This year a new Michelin tire with low rolling resistance is part of a fuel economy push. So are visually minor changes to the grille — which was just redesigned last year — and small spoilers in front of the rear tires. According to Ford car, the new grille and tire spoilers provide a three-quarter-mile-per-gallon improvement at a steady 70 mph.
Major mojo to the gasoline powertrains highlights the Escape improvements. The 4-cylinder’s displacement was increased from 2.3- to 2.5-liters and the entire upper engine redesigned for better breathing. Power thus grew from 153 to 171 horsepower. Even better, the 3.0-liter V6 gained 40 horsepower via a similar upper-engine redesign and a higher 10.3:1 compression ratio. It now boasts 240 horsepower.
Compared to the EPA’s mpg figures for the ’08 Escape, the V6 (18/26) and 4-cylinder (20/28) models both realize a 2-mpg improvement on their highway ratings. This is thanks to their tweaked motors, the new 6-speed transmission, low-rolling-resistance tires, the improved aerodynamics, and electrically assisted power steering now standard on all Escapes.
Improvements to the Hybrid models range from the 4-cylinder displacement increase to massaged powertrain control software and brake system actuation. This last point is tricky, since Hybrid Escapes balance stopping power between the traditional brakes and regenerative braking from the 94-horsepower electric motor. It’s also one reason for the Escape Hybrid’s commendable 34/30 (city/hwy) fuel economy.

Campground and/or RV Park Directory - A campground directory is a basic RVing tool. It provides an easy-to-follow system of maps and alphabetical listings which enable you to locate the RV parks and campgrounds in the area you wish to stay.
Some campground directories provide additional information such as state highway laws regulating RVs, bridge, tunnel and ferry restrictions and the location of disposal stations along major highways.
RV Magazines - You’ll be able to read about interesting places to go and things to see and do. How-to articles provide good information on improving, maintaining and repairing your rig. Technical and lifestyle experts respond to reader inquiries.
RV Clubs - The Good Sam RV Owners Club (800-234-3456) is the largest. RV clubs offer insurance programs, emergency roadside services and discounts at campgrounds. Membership usually includes a periodic magazine with informative articles and columns. Local RV clubs schedule weekend trips throughout the year. What better way to discover the campgrounds in your area.
RV Accessory Store or Catalog - Most RV accessory stores will have a magazine and book rack. RV accessory catalogs also offer RVing books and will keep you abreast of the latest in accessories and gadgets.
Libraries and Book Stores - Look under Camping, Motorhomes, Recreation, Recreation Vehicles and Travel Trailers.
A little “surfing” will produce a number of information from manufacturers, rv dealers, campgrounds, clubs and more.
Visitor Welcome Centers - Most states provide a visitor welcome center near their borders. Look for them in rest areas as enter each state. Go inside to the counter and ask for a state road map and a state parks & campgrounds directory.
Everyone would love to have the space, storage and comfort of the larger rigs. At the same time we want the agility and economy of the smaller ones.
If we are going to spend weeks or months at a time parked in an RV park, the larger, more spacious rig is your vehicle of choice. On the other hand, if we are going to spend the majority of our time in remote or primitive campgrounds, the smaller, more agile RV will probably be more appropriate.There are a few other factors to consider when selecting the size of your RV.
