A simple highway accident
A concrete truck that ran off Sea Island Road into the marsh spent Thanksgiving Day there still lying on its side as officials tried to come up with a way to move it.
Three tow trucks failed Wednesday to lift the 73,000-pound load - which includes 10 cubic yards of now hardened concrete - but succeeded only in tearing up part of a recently paved road. The truck is leaking diesel fuel and other fluids, and officials say they are contacting the insurer for the East Coast Concrete Co. to get things moving.
Most officials agree a crane will be required to get the it out of the marsh.
The accident resulted when the driver of the truck swerved to miss another vehicle and ran off the roadway, Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said.
Sea Island Road was blocked during the first attempt to remove the truck.
Glynn County Fire Department Capt. R. W. Kohlheim pointed out a definite oil sheen on some standing water in the marsh Friday and said in addition to diesel fuel, some of the spill could be transmission fluid or motor oil.

The City of Cookeville will be getting one of most advanced and expensive fire trucks it has ever purchased next year following approval of the Cookeville City Council last week.
The council approved the only bid of $688,720 from Rush Truck Sales for what’s called a 75-foot quint fire truck, which is expected to arrive in Cookeville within one year.
The quint is named for its five major features — ground ladders, aerial ladder, water supply tank, fire pump and hoses.
The truck the city is purchasing also has a 75-foot ladder that can be used for fighting larger structure fires.
Cookeville Fire Chief John Kendrick said some of the advanced features the new truck will have means that city firefighters no longer have to stretch hoses up a ladder because the new truck has a prepiped water way that is capable of moving 2,000 gallons per minute.

Jungheinrich has launched a new powered pallet truck. Available from this Autumn, the ERE 225 has a fixed stand-on platform and is equipped with third generation AC technology as standard. The new model was specially developed for fast and efficient lorry loading and unloading and for transporting heavy loads over longer distances. It can achieve top speeds up to 12.5 km/h (with load up to 9.5 km/h) and can transport loads weighing up to 2,500 kg.
“There is an obvious trend towards ride-on operation trucks with a fixed platform instead of a flip-up platform,” comments Craig Johnson, Jungheinrich UK’s marketing manager. “Warehouses and distribution centres the world over are getting bigger and trucks are handling loads over greater distances. Productivity is the key driver and this means traveling at speed but, of course, safely. ” he adds.
The ERE 225 boasts a number of advanced features designed to increase productivity and improve the performance of the operator throughout even the most demanding shift.
For example, the new model is fitted with Curve Control - an advanced safety system that automatically adjusts the truck’s speed as it enters a corner depending on the steering angle.
